1. The pterygium in this case was caused by heart fire blazing upwards and belonged to the category of progressive pterygium in Western medicine. It advanced very rapidly. If diagnosed correctly, pterygium can be prevented from progressing, the inflammation can be eliminated and the development of the disease reduced. Without appropriate and immediate treatment this case can progress rapidly, ultimately blocking the pupil and affecting the patient’s vision.
2. During the follow-up visit, even though the redness, dryness and pain in the right eye were reduced along with dissipation of the hyperaemia and swelling, the patient still experienced dry mouth. The tongue body was red with a thin yellow coating and the pulse was slightly rapid. These symptoms indicated the presence of unresolved heat.
3. The etiology of this condition is associated with exposure to wind, sand, smoke, dust and over-exposure to ultraviolet light. Patient care therefore, should, focus on avoiding these contributing factors. Avoidance of spicy food, moxa and alcohol is also recommended. Overwork or overusing the eyes at night should be minimized.
